Preheat oven to 1800 C/3500  F/ Gas Mark 4


(Fills two large storage jars)

1Kg porridge oats

500g flakes of different grains e.g. barley, rye, wheat, spelt

200g sunflower seeds

100g pumpkin seeds

100g sesame seeds

100g hazelnuts or almonds

100g pecans, coarsely chopped

200g dried fruit e.g. raisins, cherries, blueberries, chopped apricots


1  Put all ingredients except the dries fruit and pecans in a large roasting tin.

2  Bake for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the nuts are brown and toasted looking and kitchen begins to smell of toasting grain.

3  Allow to cool, then stir in the pecans and fruit.

Serve with milk and any fresh fruit in season.
